Princess Diana Crowned The Ultimate Style Icon Of All Time By 1 In 3 Brits

There are a number of celebrities known for leaving a lasting impact on fashion and culture - but according to new survey results from online bingo site Zingo Bingo, Princess Diana has been crowned the ultimate style icon of all time.

From her 1994 ‘revenge dress’ to the Travolta dress and her wedding gown designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the late royal still holds the title for the most talked-about outfits of all time, with over 1 in 3 respondents (35%) selecting Princess Diana as the most iconic for style.

The survey, which gathered the views of 2,002 UK respondents, placed David and Victoria Beckham in second place, with 1 in 10 (10%) naming the couple as the most stylish.

The pair - who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last year - have had their share of memorable looks, with the former Spice Girl now running her Victoria Beckham clothing line but previously known for coordinating outfits with David, including their matching suit and dress at their 1999 wedding.

Jennifer Aniston, considered the original trendsetter thanks to her role as Rachel Green in Friends, rounded out the top three at 9%. From strappy mini dresses and vest tops to micro sunglasses, she became known for her effortless style, even sparking the iconic ‘The Rachel’ hairstyle trend of the ’90s.

Britney Spears also ranked highly, with just under 1 in 10 respondents (9%) naming the singer’s style as the most iconic, while singer Prince followed closely behind at 8%.

This year saw the return of Oasis, with fans turning out in masses to see the Gallagher brothers perform together for the first time in over two decades. But it wasn’t just the music that united Brits as the brothers’ style also came back into focus, with football shirts, bucket hats, and parkas buttoned up to the chin all making a comeback.

Younger sibling Liam’s fashion was identified as the more iconic of the two, placing sixth overall (7%).

Other popular choices included actor Leonardo DiCaprio (6%), Kate Moss (6%), Sarah Jessica Parker as Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw (5%), and Paris Hilton (4%), all of them featured in Zingo Bingo’s top 10.

From actual royalty to Hollywood royalty, there’s no denying that the styles of well-known figures have shaped fashion over the years. Zingo Bingo spokesperson Jack Watson said: “For decades, celebrities and public figures have set the tone for fashion trends, creating iconic moments that are still referenced today. It’s no surprise that Princess Diana stood out most to respondents, given her timeless sense of style. Her ‘revenge dress’ is still talked about, while her more understated looks, like oversized jumpers and cycling shorts, continue to influence the fashion of today.

“David and Victoria Beckham’s high placement on the list also feels fitting. Their recent appearances in documentaries have brought renewed attention to their memorable style moments and highlighted Victoria’s ongoing impact in the fashion world.

“What these survey results really show is how strong the pull of nostalgic fashion still is. Many of these past trends are clearly making their way back into the mainstream - and people are embracing them.”
