Everyone Backs Their Decade
Some debates never really get settled. The best biscuit. The proper way to build a brew. And the big one, the decade that did it best.
For a lot of us, the older decades come as borrowed glamour. The platform shoes, the glitter balls and the "you had to be there" disco stories handed down by our mums and nans. The ones we lived through ourselves came with shell suits, a bedroom wall of magazine posters and a phone line nobody was allowed to hog.
At Zingo Bingo, we reckon a good bingo break is the perfect place to have this argument. Pick a decade, pick a room, put the kettle on and let the tunes do the talking.
So let's rewind through disco, denim, Britpop and beyond, and see which decade truly deserves the crown.
Round One: The Seventies Struts In
🪩 This is the decade most of us know through other people's memories. The wallpaper that could give you a headache, the collars you could hang-glide with, and a soundtrack built for the dancefloor.
Seventies moments passed down to us:
- Nan's stories about staying out until the last bus, hair still smelling of hairspray
- Orange and brown everything, including the biscuit tin
- A telly with three channels and a proper waiting game for the good programme
- Somebody's dad claiming he invented a dance move at the youth club
🎲 Room Match: Disco Inferno
Because if any decade earned a room with a mirrorball energy, it's this one. Slip in for a dab when you fancy a bit of borrowed sparkle.
Round Two: The Eighties Turn It Up
📼 Big hair, bigger shoulder pads and a synth line for every occasion. The eighties knew how to make an entrance, and plenty of us remember it from the back seat of the car with a tape whirring away.
Eighties bits we still smile about:
- Rewinding a cassette with a pencil to save the batteries
- The squeak and hiss of a video tape finding its place
- A shell suit that announced you before you'd even walked in
- Taping the charts off the radio and yelling at the DJ for talking over the intro
🎲 Zingo Tip: Queue up your favourite eighties playlist before your next session. A synth-pop backing track turns a quick game into a proper bit of theatre.
Round Three: The Nineties Take the Stage
🎶 Britpop on one side, boybands on the other, and a playground rivalry to match. The nineties gave us mixtapes made with real love, and telly you planned your whole evening around.
Nineties habits we all had:
- Choosing your allegiance in the big band rivalries and defending it to the death
- Passing notes because texting wasn't a thing yet
- The dial-up screech that meant nobody could ring the house
- Collecting anything you could, from stickers to those little plastic tazos
🎲 Room Match:The Main Stage
For the decade that lived for the gig, the anthem and the big singalong. It's the room for when you want a bit of front-row feeling with your dab.
Round Four: The Noughties Bring the Pop
💿 Low-r199 jeans, flip phones and a ringtone you paid far too much for. The noughties were shiny, a bit chaotic, and absolutely certain the millennium would change everything.
Noughties throwbacks that still land:
- Burning a CD for someone as the ultimate sign of affection
- A phone charm heavier than the phone itself
- Waiting an age for one song to download, then treasuring it forever
- Choosing your top friends and causing genuine upset in the process
🎲 Room Match: Millennium Mix
A cheerful nod to the decade that couldn't stop reinventing itself. Pop in for a bright, breezy game with a proper noughties bounce.
