Then vs Now: How a Night In Has Changed Since the '60s

Same Sofa, New Remote

Quick version: almost everything about a night in has changed since the '60s, apart from the bit where we put the kettle on first. Most of us weren't around for it, so this one is borrowed from our mums and nans, who still tell stories about waiting for the telly to warm up and the whole street knowing when your phone rang. At Zingo Bingo, we love a then-and-now, so pull up a pouffe.

The Telly

📺 Then: In the early '60s, most homes had two channels, BBC and ITV, with BBC2 joining in 1964. You didn't choose a programme so much as accept it. The set took a minute to warm up, somebody had to get up to turn the dial, and when you switched it off the picture shrank to a tiny white dot in the middle of the screen. Colour arrived on BBC2 in 1967, though plenty of families carried on in black and white for years.

Now: The telly lives in your pocket, the remote has buttons you'll never press, and the biggest decision of the night is which app to scroll through before giving up and rewatching an old favourite.

🎲 Zingo Tip: Pick what you're watching before you sit down, the way our nans had to. Less scrolling means more time for a game or two before bed.

The Snacks

🍮 Then: Treats were a weekend thing. Ask anyone who grew up in the '60s and you'll hear about the pop man delivering fizzy drinks to the door, and the tin of fruit that only came out on a Sunday.

Night-in treats our nans still talk about:

  • Tinned fruit cocktail with evaporated milk, fought over for the single cherry
  • Crisps with a little blue twist of salt you had to shake in yourself
  • Bread and dripping, which nobody under fifty will admit to trying
  • A packet dessert whisked up in a bowl and eaten before it had a chance to set

Now: We've got sharing bags that never get shared and a delivery app that knows our order better than we do.

🎲 Room Match: The Penny Arcade

Old-school fun with a seaside feel. The name alone takes you back to the end of the pier with a bag of chips.

Keeping in Touch

☎️ Then: If your family had a phone at all, it sat on a little table in the hall, usually next to a notepad and a pen that didn't work. Some streets shared a party line, so you'd pick up and find the neighbours halfway through a conversation. Calls were short, because somebody was always worrying about the bill.

Now: We've got group chats with dozens of unread messages, video calls from the supermarket and voice notes that last longer than a phone call ever did.

🎲 Zingo Tip: Bring back the hallway phone feeling by ringing a friend for a natter while you both play. Old habit, new room.

The Bingo Bit

🎟️ Then: The Betting and Gaming Act 1960 opened the door to commercial bingo clubs, and over the decade old cinemas up and down the country were turned into bingo halls. Your nan put her best coat on, bagged her usual seat and made a whole evening of it, with the walk home spent going over every game.

Now: The bingo hall comes to the sofa, and slippers are allowed. The chat box does the job of the lady on the next table who always knew everyone's business.

🎲 Room Match: The Main Stage

For a bit of that big-hall feeling, minus the bus home in the rain.

Bonus: Host a Then vs Now Night In

Mix the old and the new with this quick checklist:

✅ Watch something in black and white, just to see what all the fuss was about

✅ Ask your mum or nan what their Saturday night looked like, and write down the best line

✅ Swap one modern snack for a '60s classic (tinned fruit and evaporated milk, if you're brave)

✅ Set a finish time for your bingo, the way the hall called the last game at the end of the night

🎲 Room Match: Retro Grid 75

Where old-school bingo feelings meet a very modern sofa.

What Did Your Nan's Night In Look Like?

💬 Did she have a favourite chair nobody else dared sit in? A biscuit tin that held buttons instead of biscuits? Tell us the story that always comes out at family dos.

Let's Zingo and Keep the Kettle On

☕🎲 The channels multiplied, the phone left the hallway and the bingo hall moved onto the sofa. The kettle stayed exactly where it was.
