These Are The 90s Fashion Trends Brits Would Most Like To See Make A Comeback
  • According to survey results from online bingo site Zingo Bingo, flared jeans have emerged as the most-loved fashion trend of the ’90s, with nearly 1 in 3 Brits (29%) hoping for their comeback
  • Bottom-half clothing dominated overall, with mini skirts, double denim, and denim overalls also proving popular
  • The survey also revealed the least-liked fashion trends of the 2000s and 2020s - with velour tracksuits leaving a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons in the noughties
  • Meanwhile, just over 1 in 3 respondents (35%) viewed super-long acrylic nails as the tackiest trend of the 2020s

Fashion trends often come and go, but some style moments are known for leaving more of a lasting effect than others.

Now, according to new survey results from online bingo site Zingo Bingo, which gathered the views of 2,002 UK respondents, the nation’s most and least loved fashion picks across the last three decades have been uncovered.

1990s

Starting in the nineties - known for its casual approach to clothing, with grunge style, slip dresses and mom jeans - flared jeans came out on top as the trend Brits would most like to see return. The decade-defining look, which is arguably already making a full-circle comeback, was voted the most-wanted trend, with nearly 1 in 3 (29%) choosing the style.

Micro mini skirts, once favoured by the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé, also proved popular, with over 1 in 5 Brits (22%) keen to see them return. Double denim followed closely behind, taking 19% of the vote.

Another denim favourite rounded out the top picks, with denim overalls chosen by 18% of respondents, alongside bucket hats (also 18%), which many would like to see make a comeback.

2000s

The noughties produced some questionable looks, and when it comes to the styles Brits would most like to see binned, velour tracksuits took the top spot.

Despite being a signature look for the likes of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian during the decade and even growing in popularity again now, over 1 in 5 respondents (22%) chose the athletic two-piece as the worst trend.

Skinny eyebrows followed closely behind as one of the worst trends of the decade, with 17% of voters selecting the look. Dresses over jeans, a style that has since resurfaced with the Y2K revival, was also seen as a potential fashion crisis at 15%.

While many view designer brands as a sign of luxury, more than 1 in 10 respondents (15%) were not impressed by an over-abundance of logos and chose it as the noughties trend they would most like to see scrapped.

2020s

2020s fashion has seen the rise of comfort-driven loungewear and gender-neutral streetwear. But according to Zingo Bingo survey respondents, the beauty trend of super-long acrylic nails was considered the most problematic.

Over 1 in 3 (35%) called for the trend to be retiredimmediately, while mullets came in a close second. Having seemingly made a comeback in recent years, the modern mullet with tapered, faded sides and textured styling became trendy again, but 30% of respondents were not overly keen on its return.

Hair-related trends also featured prominently, with over 1 in 5 (22%) citing the moustache trend as one they would most like to see go, while crocs (29%) and bleached eyebrows (29%) were also among the top ten.

Zingo Bingo spokesperson Jack Watson shares: “The survey results highlight how strongly nostalgia shapes the way we look at fashion. Across the 90s, 2000s and 2020s, certain trends such as flared jeans, double denim and denim overalls still feel familiar and appealing. These styles defined whole decades, so it’s understandable that people are keen to see them return.

“On the flip side, some trends from the noughties and beyond haven’t aged quite as well. Velour tracksuits and ultra-thin eyebrows, for example, were huge at the time but are now viewed much less favourably. And in the 2020s, things like super long acrylic nails and revived mullets have really divided opinion.

“What really comes through is that people are now much more selective about what they want to bring back and what they’re ready to move on from. Fashion keeps evolving, but our connection to the trends we grew up with clearly plays a big part in how we see them today.”
